The inaugural World Refrigeration Day will launch in style at the Temperature Controlled Storage & Distribution (TCS&D) show this June.

The first ever World Refrigeration Day will be celebrated in style at TCS&D 2019

The result of a decade-long personal crusade by well-known industry figure, Steve Gill, World Refrigeration Day (WRD) has recently been established as a global event to take place annually on 26th June. With this date being the second day of TCS&D 2019, WRD is being embraced by the show’s organisers and many prominent members of the industry who will be gathered for the exhibition and conference at the East of England Arena in Peterborough.

Live-streaming from the WRD Village

“Plans for the first ever World Refrigeration Day are taking shape and we’re very excited about them,” said Exhibition Director, Martyn Cogan. “TCS&D 2019 will feature a WRD Village that will be the focus for the celebrations. The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) and the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Board (ACRIB) will be hosting a series of workshops and will also be live-streaming selected seminars internationally to promote this global awareness campaign.”

UNEP supports WRD

WRD (@worldrefday on Twitter) is being supported by trade associations and professional bodies for the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump industry from around the globe, including the IOR, the IIR (International Institute of Refrigeration) and AREA (the European association of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump contractors). “Given the importance of refrigeration and air conditioning to the food supply chain, the health sector and general human comfort,” said Steve Gill, former President of the IOR and founder of WRD, “it’s fantastic that the plan to hold an annual World Refrigeration Day has come to fruition at last.

The date – which marks the birthday of thermodynamic engineer, Lord Kelvin – is now fixed in the industry’s calendar and this year’s activities will help to promote and grow the event. I’m particularly pleased,” added Steve Gill, “that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will be using WRD to promote responsible use of refrigerants in 147 developing economies.”

Career opportunities

Miriam Rodway, Chief Executive of the IOR, commented: “The IOR and ACRIB will present a live webinar presentation on various refrigeration applications – such as building services, transport, food storage and catering – in the WRD Village at TCS&D 2019. We’ll also be showing our ‘Careers in Cooling’ video, which promotes the sector and its career opportunities, as well as formally launching our new educational website, ‘Fantastic Fridges’, which has been refreshed with additional video content, quizzes and games for school children.”

Seminars and awards

The UK’s only dedicated event for the cold storage and distribution sector, TCS&D is supported by the British Frozen Food Federation, the Food Storage & Distribution Federation, the Freight Transport Association, the Road Haulage Association and the Institute of Refrigeration. As well as showcasing the latest innovations in temperature-controlled storage and transport, the event will feature a comprehensive programme of free-to-attend seminars and will be co-located with the annual TCS&D Awards, which will take place on the evening of the first day of the show.

There will also be a soft launch of a new event, the ‘Total Logistics Show’, which has been added at the request of some of TCS&D’s long-term exhibitors. “Over the years our exhibitors have asked if we would expand TCS&D with add-on events that complement the temperature-controlled sector,” said Exhibition Director, Martyn Cogan. “So this year we will be adding a new event that will run at the same time, which is one of four that we are developing. In the long term we have some very exciting plans for the evolution of TCS&D.”
